After a long arrival day, it was time to face the music of my first week. Fortunately, the guys at the plant had sent me a message saying that I should rest in the morning and plan to arrive on-site around noon so they could take me to lunch and show me around in the afternoon; an offer I was more than happy to take up. Monday: November 13, 2023 I was wide awake at 3AM but after a break to browse the internet on the couch, I managed another 1-2 hours to wake around 8am. I had breakfast in the hotel reception/lobby (accueil), it had a decent spread and attentive staff; not a bad deal for ~10 euro. Still, I don't really intend to eat breakfast most days, aside from a few pastries and what not, I can save my calories for fancier meals out and about. The commute to Castets was an easy one and wasn't more than about 20 km, which is frankly an amazing distance to do for the electric vehicle. I personally have no issues with roundabouts and understand that they usually help traf
Tuesday, May 21 A longer day at work than expected. Things didn't go as planned and the batch behaved differently than the previous one despite only minor tweaks in our procedure. Still, overall progress and learnings. I got a kick out of visiting the bakery this morning to buy my sandwich and saw they offered both chocolatines and pains au chocolats 😆 Madames et messieurs: un pain au chocolat! This might be the first sandwich I've had in France that was round instead of cylindrical I've gotten much better at parking in the apartment garage, good thing too cause almost all the spots were filled tonight. Dinner was just down the street at Jack the Cockerel. It wasn't the only place open at 22h but it was one of the closest. It was lively with beat heavy music in the background and a blend of themes. Many young people were here, I think it's just across the way from a nightclub (boîte de nuit), I've never seen a night club open here in my time in France
Monday, April 29 - Bayonne There was some excitement this morning. Around 3:30 AM, I woke up. It seems someone within a block had decided to blast club dance music; oddly, that wasn't what woke me up. Instead, someone else seemed to have been roused before me and decided to take matters into their own hands. He must've opened up his window and imagined that his yells of "TERMINER!! AIEAIEAIEAIE, TERMINER!!" were overpowering the music. I'm guessing a somewhat more effective good Samaritan called the cops to resolve the noise because the music eventually subsided and I returned to my slumber. It was a subdued day at work; since Labor Day (at least, European Labor Day) lands on Wednesday, testing activities are taking a back seat to catching up on analyses, month-end tasks, and hosting my boss' boss. I've been looking forward to his visit because he was waiting to meet to discuss to any level of detail a schedule for the rest of my time in Europe. A
